A Must See : North Borneo Sacred Legacy Photographic Exhibition II
Historical pictures on display
2010/02/03
By Datu Ruslan Sulai
KOTA KINABALU: About 2,000 photographs of pre-independence Sabah - some taken as early as 1903 - are on display at the Sabah Museum here for a month.
The exclusive images were captured by George Cathcart Woolley, a North Borneo Chartered Company officer, who travelled all over Sabah, then called North Borneo, between 1901 and 1932.
Woolley, who died here in 1947, had made a will before his death that all the images be handed over to the Sabah Philosophical Society (now Sabah Society) for posterity.
A graduate of Queens College at Oxford University, Woolley returned to England on his retirement from the North Borneo Company in 1932, but decided to return in 1935.
"The images taken by Woolley are invaluable considering that many pictures of pre-independence Sabah were destroyed during World War 2," state Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said when launching the exhibition.
The images taken by Woolley portrays Sabah's diverse ethnic, culture and scenery in the early 1900s.
Masidi hoped that the locals, especially students, as well as tourists would take full advantage of the exhibition to learn more about the history of Sabah and its people. Also on display are Woolley's diaries and other artifacts belonging to him.
